See You Next Year!!!

I had the opportunity to get out today for a few photographs. My oldest daughter was my cooperative model, and we had a fun time in downtown Baton Rouge. For those of you who aren't aware, there are many changes taking place downtown.

First of all, there is a project underway to refinish the iron fencing that surrounds the old state capitol building. Section by section it is being taken down, stripped, and powdercoated. The new finish is nearly black as opposed to the old light grey finish and shows really well as a backdrop in photographs. It is tough going to do portraits in that area at the moment due to all of the construction equipment, but we were able to manage a few.

The second big change downtown has taken place at the old train station at the Arts and Science Museum. There has been an antiquated train on display there for an eternity, but sadly no more. The passenger cars and dining car have been sold and moved to new homes. I am unsure as to the fate of the old engine, For now the engine still rests silently in downtown Baton Rouge. We decided to take a few photos with the old engine just in case it too is gone the next time we visit downtown. It sure looks empty outside the old train station!!

Elbow Grease

There is nothing quite like the smell of a new car, and buying one is usually a momentus occasion. These are a few shots of some old rusting in peace vehicles I have found near my hometown. Though well past their prime, I am sure they were the epitome of engineering in their heyday. I imagined the families that owned these machines as they went to the dealerships to pick them out. Negotiating the price. Excited. Nervous. Choosing optional equipment. Perhaps even driving around after the purchase to show off their new car to friends.

Oh!!!......I am blogging now!!!

I have finally been convinced that I should keep a blog. The deciding criteria was that it is just to easy not to do it. Hopefully by the time 2008 rolls in I will be familair with everything I need to be familiar with to be able to keep this blog up to date with the goings on of JKMann Photography.

I have recently begun the search for a very inexpensive way to use my Canon 580EX II flash unit off of the camera. If you don't know it, the 580 EX II has a PC jack so that all one needs to do is purchase a cord, and (if your camera doesn't have one) a hotshoe to PC adaptor. This would seem like a pretty easy and cheap way to get the flash off the camera, but there is one major drawback. Using the PC connection will allow the flash to be used only in manual, and the highly touted Canon ETTL II functionality would be lost. I have a plan to be able to extend the flash up to 30 feet from the camera and retain ETTL II functionality for under a hundred dollars. I plan to go forward with this experiment after the first of next year so......stay tuned.

I was lucky to have expanded my passion for photography into a business last March. Friends and aquaintences had told me for years that I should be charging $$ for my photography. I did not think that it would take off as fast as it has. I truely feel blessed that I can now share something that is such a huge part of who I am with others.
